130th anniversary celebratory weekend at Wylam Institute

We were delighted to celebrate our 130th anniversary at the Institute from 10-12 April.  One of Northumberland's oldest and largest village halls, the Institute  has long been at the heart of village life, providing a welcoming venue for classes, groups and special gatherings across generations.

Originally constructed in January 1895 and officially opened by Sir JWH Riddell on 11 April 1896, the Institute was described by the Hexham Courant in 1896 as “having a large hall for public lectures, bazaars, meetings, tea parties and balls,” with a reading room boasting ideal north light and even two reclining baths with hot and cold water, anticipating a steady revenue”.

As part of the anniversary festivities, the Institute hosted an exhibition titled ‘Past, Present and Future’ from Friday to Sunday, featuring photographs, stories, plans and programmes that showcased its rich history, the many people and events it has welcomed, and the evolution of the building itself. Visitors enjoyed a coffee morning on Saturday, engaging with village historians and trustees, followed by a film night featuring Sherlock Holmes, reflecting the era during which the Institute first opened its doors.  A flower bed has been installed by Wylam Rangers in the garden.
