Echoes or Sounds of Silence?

“Echoes” is a 23 minute long track from the “Meddle” album by Pink Floyd, released on 5th November 1971 which, incidentally, was the best year ever for all time greatest albums. (happy to discuss).

The “Sounds of Silence” was originally a track on the Simon & Garfunkel debut album “Wednesday Morning, 3am”, released in March 1964. This original acoustic version didn’t sell well.

So where am I going with this? Well, we now have acoustic sound absorbing panels to deaden the “echoes” in the Main Hall. Not quite “sounds of silence” but you can now have a normal conversation. Should make quite a difference on quiz and music nights.

It was all a bit perplexing for the badminton group though, who were so used to judging the flight of the shuttlecock by the sound it made coming off the racquet. This, of course, enabled the players to glide effortlessly around the court in perfect anticipation. With the new panels there is little audio guide and now they just run around in circles looking upwards and bumping in to each other!

On the subject of “windows” (it’s a music and record shop), we just got a big grant to replace the equally big windows in the main hall. Thanks to The National Lottery Community Fund and the Hall Trustees who put the application together.

Furthermore, on the subject of “flooring” (we were floored by the speed in which the windows grant came through), it’s being laid down sometime in October. There’s a musical reference there too.

I’m now really struggling for a link to the heating boiler (suggestions on a postcard please), but it is coming to the end of its useful life. Bit like a motor car, when the cost of repairs and maintenance gets closer to the cost of replacement. Fortunately, there’s some flexibility built into the financial plan. Could be a “hot” topic at the next committee meeting.

Speaking of hot topics, well not really, we would also like to replace the kitchen at some point in the future as well as expanding storage facilities. Plenty done or happening in the meantime though to make some visible enhancements for our community to enjoy.

There you go. If you “enjoy” a good dance and prance don’t forget to book for the Ceilidh.  It’s on Saturday 23rd November, 7 to 11pm. Tickets are £12 each and there’s a catered buffet, licenced bar and a raffle (love a good raffle). Tickets from Jane at janelkartupelis@gmail.com

If there’s anything else you would like to see going on at the Hall don’t forget that every Tuesday we have an open to all “Cuppa & Company” event from 10 to 12 where there is always a Trustee present to listen and pass views back to the Managing Committee. Also, please check out our “Events” listing on the website.
