Millenium Wall Hanging
In May 1999 the Embroidery Group was formed for the purpose of making a Millenium Wall Hanging of a Parish map. The design was created in the form of a triptych. The embroidery is not a topographically accurate portrayal of Longhorsley Parish but is a montage of the buildings, activities and landmarks familiar to all parishioners. This wonderful triptych now hangs on the wall of the Main Hall for all to appreciate.
Emily Wilding Davison - Suffragette
The suffragette Emily Wilding Davison often stayed at her mother’s house in the village between her activities and spells in prison. Her mother ran a shop in the village. In June 1913 Emily left Longhorsley to catch the train from Morpeth to head to the Epsom Derby. She allegedly went there to attempt to attach a suffragette banner to the King’s horse during the race. She deliberately ran out in front of the King’s horse in an attempt to accomplish this but Emily and the horse and jockey fell to the ground. The horse struck Emily in the head and she died four days later.
In 2015 we were presented with a wonderful gift of a suffragette themed proggy mat wall-hanging made by the Belford Hookers Group. We had it set in a case to protect it and it now hangs with pride on the wall in the Side Hall.
Emily’s Longhorsley
Local author, Margaret Scott, reveals more about the time Emily spent in Longhorsley and how the villagers in recent years continue to honour her in her book Emily’s Longhorsley published in 2018.
