Community Appeal: Support Needed to Preserve The Torch Centre

Hexham, 4th August 2024 – The Torch Centre, a beloved community hub that has served the local area for nearly forty years, is facing significant financial challenges and is appealing for emergency funds to ensure its continued operation. The Centre has been a crucial space where disabled and able-bodied individuals can come together to socialise, engage in recreational and competitive activities, and foster a sense of community integration.

Rising operational costs and the current economic climate have placed the Torch Centre in a precarious financial position. The newly established Management Team is actively seeking ways to address this shortfall, including the launch of a local appeal for emergency funds along with the exploration of long-term financial solutions.

"The loss of The Torch Centre would be a significant blow to our community," said John Pike, Joint Chair at The Torch Centre. "It would mean the disappearance of a vital space that brings people together, promotes inclusivity and supports the well-being of so many individuals. The community would undoubtedly be a lesser place without The Torch Centre’s presence and the invaluable services it provides."

Although its user groups now come from much wider backgrounds, The Torch Centre remains true to its core objective of providing a safe space for our more vulnerable community members. Weekly activities include discos and snooker nights and the Centre also hosts groups such as JiveAlive, U3A and Mother and Baby groups.

The Torch Centre is calling on local residents and businesses to help support this special place. Donations can be made to the emergency fund as a one-off basis or as regular contributions. All donations will be Gift Aided wherever possible, maximising their impact.

While there is going to be a long-term need for charitable support, there is an immediate need to raise £5,000. The Management Team expresses deep gratitude for any support that can be provided, emphasising that every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference.
