GREAT WHITTINGTON VILLAGE HALL AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2024

 

HALL USE.

 

In September the hall has been used more than once every two days, we believe that this is greater than ever before in its fifty two years of existence and during the month five new classes, groups or events have started on a regular basis. We expect this level of use to continue or increase for the rest of the year.

 

 

NEW USES.

 

PILATES.

A new class started on  Thursday 5th September with Anna Little. Anna@annalittle.co.uk. The classes were one hour from 1.30pm till 2.30pm but have been so successful that from 7th November she will be starting a second hour from 2.30pm till 3.30pm. SOUND BATH.

Started 11th September with Lindsay McCaulay, www.soundmedicine.co.uk. Further sessions once per month on 9th October, 6th November and 4th December. Contact her on the website or lindsay@soundmedicine.co.uk for more details.

 

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE.

On the 13th September the first play of our new contract with them was Present Laughter by Noel Coward. Eight shows per year with Prima Facie on 29th November staring Jodie Comer and The Importance of Being Ernest in February next year.

 

UPHOLSTERY GROUP.

The 17th September saw the first session of this group run by Hilary Watson with twelve workshops every Tuesday from 10.00am till 2.00pm. Contact her on hilarywatson21@gmail.com.  If you have an old tired chair needing TLC this is the place for you.

 

CRAFT WORKSHOP.

28th September was the opening day for a series of practical tutorials by Jean Tinsley, jean@jeantinsleyarts.com or 07913264768. September was willow weaving a potato skib. Following on will be19th October, a wooden based willow basket and on 30th November Christmas Willow Weaving Workshop.

 

EXISTING ORGANISATIONS AND HALL EVENTS.

 

WOMENS INSTITUTE.

Great Whittington and Matfen Women’sInstitute held its monthly meeting on Tuesday 3rd September: it meets the first Tuesday in the month. October to March in Matfen and April to September in Great Whittington Village Halls. As well as a programme of talks /speakers, the members meet regularly for walks, lunches, visits to museums and galleries etc. if you are interested in joining, please just go to a meeting or contact Jean Conteh on contehjean@gmail.com

 

FROSTY’S FISH AND CHIPS.

Unfortunately the fish and chip van could not be here on the first Friday in September and in October will be on holiday so back on Friday 1st November from 7.00pm. The earlier one more suitable for those families with children continues on the third Friday each month.

 

COFFEE MORNING.

Our regular first Saturday in every month with fresh home made cakes and good chat. Come along from 10.30am to 12.30pm. It’s only £4.00 for coffee and cake!

 

 

 

PARISH COUNCIL.

The PC held their regular bimonthly meeting on 10th September. They are in the process of creating a PC email list so if you want to keep in the  know email marion.petrie@ncl.ac.uk with your details

 

WOMEN’S WELL BEING EVENING.

Run by Glynis Murray Hill twice per month with October on the 8th and 22nd starting at 7.30pm. Contact her on glynismh112@hotmail.co.uk for more details.

 

 

FUTURE PLANNED EVENTS

 

BREAST CANCER NOW.

Sue Robson, our neighbour and former hall committee member, is currently fighting breast cancer and has found the charity Breast Cancer Now to be an invaluable support to her physical and emotional well-being. Despite being halfway through her chemotherapy regime Sue is taking part in their Wear it Pink day on Friday 18th October by walking “The Loop” in Great Whittington clad in glorious pink! She is looking for as many people as possible to join her and donate to the cause. So if you would like to support Sue and Breast Cancer Now’s work please come along wearing your best Barbie / Ken gear and join her and Ed at the hall at 11.30am. DEFIBFILLATOR FUNDRAISER.

On Saturday 26th October the legendary guitarist Russ Tippins plays at the hall. Doors open at 7.00pm and tickets are £10.00 (under 12’s free) can be obtained from Chris on 07960981721. The bar will be open and it would be fantastic if we could raise the £750 needed for three sessions of training on the defibrillator

 

HIGHLIGHT’S RURAL TOURING - CRAFTS FOR WELL-BEING WORKSHOP

We have decided to do something a bit different this Autumn by hosting a Chine Colle Christmas Card Printing Workshopled by Carrie Dennison. www.craftsforwellbeing.co.uk.

This is a fun printing technique combining collage with Lino printing. It’s an opportunity to learn a wonderfully traditional art form. HIGHLIGHT’S RURAL TOURING - THE BOOKSHOP BAND

Friday 15th November at 7.30 pm.

Internationally acclaimed and award winning group The Bookshop Band perform a unique concert of songs inspired by books. The offspring of an artistic love in between a duo of folk singer - songwriters and a multi award winning independent bookshop, Mr. B’s Emporium of Reading Delights. They write and perform songs inspired by books written by hundreds of authors, from Shakespeare to Philip Pullman. They have released 13 studio albums featuring many of the authors they have worked with.

LINDISFARNE TO THE LAKE DISTRICT.

On Wednesday 20th November at 7.00pm by  popular request the return of the amazing speaker who gave such an interesting talk on Hadrian’s Wall last year This will be another fascinating insight into the region we all live in.

 

PRIMA FACIE.

CHRISTMAS FAIR.

Our very popular Christmas Fair combines with the December coffee morning on 7th December. We have a great selection of stalls coming for most of your Christmas gifts.  These include the following:

Tilly’s Barn – hand made items for the home in a range of colourful fabrics and oilcloths

Hamish Candles – Luxury hand-poured candles, reed diffusers and room sprays

First and Last Brewery – Local brewery, based in Bellingham, with a range of bottled and canned beers

Phillippa Lee Glass Art – Fused and stained glass gift items made by a local artist.

The Crafty Weavers – Stamfordham based craft group with hand made items

The third NTL event. This Oscar Wilde classic at a date still to be fixed in February.
