Heritage

The building that now comprises the Village Hall was previously a “County Primary School, School Playground and Teacher's House with adjoining garden". In 1971 a group of people purchased the school for the purpose of creating a Village Hall (see constitution document under ‘Documents’) and the Trustees of the Hall vested the freehold to the Charities Commission. On the 26th April 1972, Great Whittington Village Hall became a Registered Charity.

There are still people living in the Parish who attended the school and remember how it became the Village Hall. Some of these appear in the attached photos which show the team who played in football matches that were part of the fundraising effort to purchase the Hall. The B&W photographs are provided by Richard Dodd.

Since these early days the Hall has been a focus for all kinds of community activities and celebrations. The attached photographs of jazz picnics, summer BBQs and childrens events show a few of these and illustrate how the Hall has been a source of enduring pleasure for Parishioners over many decades. Long may it continue! Many thanks to Eryl Daniel and Barbara Hinchliffe for the photos.
