Whittingham Memorial Institute (the village hall) was built in 1925 as a memorial to local residents who lost their lives in the First World War (1914 - 1918). The hall is located in the picturesque village of Whittingham on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, just off the A697 and approximately 7 miles west of Alnwick. The village is regarded as the gateway to the Cheviots and provides an ideal base for exploring the beautiful Northumberland countryside. The hall is a registered charity run by a Management Committee made up of volunteers from our community. Funds, to maintain the building and pay the bills, are raised through hire charges, fundraising and grants.
The building underwent major refurbishment in 2009 supported by a £185,000 Big Lottery Grant. The works were extensive and included complete rewiring, new heating system, double glazed windows, kitchen and toilets, raising the floor to improve accessibility and a new roof over the meeting room. Further, in 2025 solar panels were installed on the main roof, together with battery storage and LED lighting.
