Matfen village hall was part of the village school from 1863 until the school's closure in 1972.
After this, it became the local Post Office for a few years until it was decided to offer it to the village as a community building. A Lease and Trust Deed was drawn up in 1975, which outlines the responsibilities of the Village Hall Committee who maintain the hall and manage its use for the benefit of the community.
Many residents of Matfen remember their school days in Matfen County Primary School. A wooden verandah ran along the outside of the hall in those days.
