HISTORY

Stocksfield Community Association began life as Stocksfield Institute Community Association in 1959 - hence local people referring to the Community Centre as "SICA".

It was registered as a charity and remained so until 2011 when it became a ‘charitable company limited by guarantee’. This meant it was registered both at the Charity Commission and Companies House – and it was Companies House who insisted the word ‘Institute’ be dropped from its title. In 2018 changes in Charity Commission rules allowed  charitable companies limited by guarantee to convert to a ‘Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This gives exactly the same legal status without the need to register with Companies House.  The wish to convert to a CIO was unanimously agreed at a General Meeting of members in 2018 and CIO status was confirmed by the Charity Commission in April 2019. Stocksfield Community Association’s charity number remains the same and its charitable objectives remain unchanged since its formation in 1959.

The Community Association owns and manages Stocksfield Community Centre for the benefit of the residents of Stocksfield

The day to day running of the Community Centre is carried out by the Community Centre Manager; the board of trustees oversee building maintenance and improvements, finance, communication, new projects and staffing matters.

Trustees are elected by members of the Association at Annual General Meetings at which all members are eligible to both vote and stand for election.
