After The Great War it was felt that a community hall would be a fitting memorial to those who had died and served in the war. A fund raising committee was established. The land was donated by local farmers and the hall was constructed from ex army huts. The Roll of Honour is built into the wall of the Reading Room. The building was completed in 1921 and was opened by Lord and Lady Armstrong of Cragside.
